Analysis of Illicit and Legal Cannabis Products for a Suite of Chemical and Microbial Contaminants

Presented by Andrien Rackov (Research Scientist, RPC)

Webinar (Public)

Registration Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7aM13xFvTdiOQMFc0BztsQ

The legalization of cannabis in Canada in 2018 set out to accomplish a number of things, including minimizing harms of use, establishing a safe and responsible supply chain, and enforcing public safety and protection. Since the introduction of the Cannabis Act and Regulations, the legal cannabis market has progressively been displacing illicit sources of cannabis. Despite many cannabis users choosing regulated cannabis products, illicit cannabis sales continue to be pervasive. In this work, we compared illicit and legal cannabis products tested for potency and chemical/microbial contaminants. On the whole, we found that illicit products contained elevated levels of chemical and microbial contaminants and greatly missed the mark with advertised potencies. In contrast, regulated cannabis products that were tested passed Health Canada requirements. While the lower cost of illicit products may appeal to some cannabis users, this work highlights safety concerns and dubious potency claims of the illicit market.

Presented by Andrien Rackov (RPC). Andrien is a research scientist and the supervisor of research services at the Research & Productivity Council (RPC) in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where he and his team help clients from diverse sectors answer critical research questions. As QPIC, he oversees psychedelics research conducted under RPC’s controlled drugs and substances dealer’s license. In the realm of cannabis, he has tackled a variety of projects including cannabis aerosol analyses, stability investigations, method development and validation for cannabis 2.0 products (e.g. edibles, beverages), exhaled breath analysis (e.g. health monitoring, impairment testing), and air quality assessment (e.g. occupational exposure). As an invited speaker, he has shared his experiences at the World Cannabis Congress (Saint John 2019) and the Masterclass Medicinal Cannabis (Ottawa 2018 and Leiden 2019). Andrien received both his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from McGill University, where he trained as an analytical chemist and developed portable, non-invasive biomedical devices for health monitoring. He is passionate about mentoring the next generation of scientists and holds an honorary research associate appointment at the University of New Brunswick.

Standardization is an important cornerstone to the success of new products, allowing for meaningful comparisons to be made amongst products. However, since cannabis vapes hit the market, specific testing standards for the cannabis vape space have yet to be established. The general lack of testing standards and regulatory guidance, creates potential risk for product makers, consumers and regulatory agencies alike. For Vape products, liquid testing alone is not enough. The comprehensive testing of vape products must include the analysis of aerosols emitted from the device and delivered to the consumer.
Before testing cannabis vape aerosols, the aerosol must be generated in a reproducible and relevant manner. This has yet to be determined. To fill these knowledge gaps, this session will expand on the findings from The Blinc Group and Labstat International’s vape topography survey that provided important data on consumer vaping habits and consumption. Ultimately, a standardized puffing regimen facilitates a technical understanding of the harmonization between the device, the formulation, and the resulting vapour.
Standardized aerosol testing is vital in providing the answers to two fundamental questions:
1. Is the product performing as designed (i.e. delivering compounds of interest as intended)?
2. Is the product generating any unintended compounds or degradation by-products?

Presented by Labstat’s Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA), Peter Joza. Mr. Joza monitors the development of new and emerging technologies, to adapt the testing services offered by Labstat to these products. Mr. Joza joined Labstat in 1990 and was actively involved in the growth of Labstat through the development and implementation of procedures used by both the food and tobacco characterization programs. Mr. Joza is highly experienced in the development, management and translation of testing information to a variety of audiences.

He has been the presenter or co-author of more than 40 presentations at international research conferences or workshops, and has co-authored 10 peer-reviewed publications. As a Chartered Chemist with the Association of the Chemical Profession of Ontario, Mr. Joza is a recognized global expert in his field and is an active member of several CORESTA (Cooperation Centre for Scientific Research Relative to Tobacco) study groups involved with various types of product testing.
Peter is an active member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tobacco Laboratory Network (TobLabNet), as well as the International Standards Organization ISO TC126 (Tobacco Products), ISO TC126/WG3 (Vaping Products) and ISO TC126/WG22 (Heated Products). Mr. Joza attended McMaster University and received his B.Sc (Majors) Chemistry in 1988.

Ensuring Quality Systems for Cannabis Manufacturing (US/FDA Focus)

Webinar (Public)

Presented by Labstat and EAS Consulting Group

Registration Link: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9Jg6B-1RQGmSuxPgSV9I5A

Cannabis business owners can benefit from the development and implementation of Quality Systems for the manufacture of their products including a higher quality product and more efficiency in overall operations with less waste. Although Canada has federally legalized cannabis and has specified regulations for manufacturing, the US has not legalized cannabis at a federal level. For products manufactured in the U.S., that Quality System is based on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Though these products are not currently federally legal to sell in the U.S., the development of sound systems that stresses quality trained employees is an important step to preparation for when that day comes. But regardless of where products are sold, ensuring customer safety is key. Understand the principles of Quality System development and how to begin designing and executing them in your business. Customers and investors alike, will be more attracted to your company because of your GMPs. Be ahead of the curve, begin the practical implementation of GMPs at your facility now.
